Lillie Loves to Read

Reader of all kinds of books but favorites genres include mystery, sic-fi, romance, thrillers, YA, fantasy, general fiction, memoirs. I'll try anything once.

Prodigal Son by Dean Koontz

Prodigal Son (Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, #1) - Kevin J. Anderson, Dean Koontz

My first Dean Koontz. I've never felt the need to read any of his books but I did for book club. We read all kinds of books and it was time for a horror. Could not connect with the characters. Probably wouldn't have finished it if it hadn't been up for discussion.

Final verdict: Not sure Koontz is for me

The Blue Box by A.L. Kennedy

The Blue Book: A Novel - A.L. Kennedy

Gave up on this...there are too many books in my tbr pile to waste anymore time on this one. Second person narrator is not my thing.

Final verdict: DNF

Hell or High Water by Joy Castro

Hell or High Water - Joy Castro

Luckily, I picked up this book from the "New" shelf at the library without knowing anything about it. Had I looked the reviews up, there's no way I would've been interested. I don't, generally, like books that are this dark. But having said that, I'm glad I picked it up at the library thinking it would be a straight forward mystery (which it wasn't).

Final verdict: It's good to take chances

The Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

Orphan Train - Christina Baker Kline

Two stories interwoven, one from the past and one current, in this wonderful book. Two lonely souls connecting and becoming friends and confidants. Beautiful.

Again my library's "New" shelf comes through.

Final verdict: Fabulous book

Spider's Bite - Jennifer Estep Fun urban fantasy.

Pigeon Pie Mystery by Julia Stewart

The Pigeon Pie Mystery - Julia Stuart, Alison Jay

Cozy mystery with an Indian Princess living in Hampton Court Palace by the grace of Queen Victoria. I loved that the protagonist was not an elderly lady but a young bumbling lady.

This is the second book by Julia Stewart that I've read. Though I loved her first one, I'm glad I read this one too.

Final verdict: Fun read.

Doomed Queens: Royal Women Who Met Bad Ends, From Cleopatra to Princess Di by Kris Waldherr

Doomed Queens: Royal Women Who Met Bad Ends, From Cleopatra to Princess Di - Kris Waldherr

Disappointing, thought I was going to be reading something a little more depth. I was looking for longer sections. Instead what I got was a lot of smaller chapters. There were many "queens" I didn't care about. Think it would've been much better had the author concentrated on a handful of "queens" with more information.

Final verdict: Ok

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami, Jay Rubin

This is the second book that I’ve read by Murakami and it won’t be the last. His writing makes me feel as though I’m walking around in a Salvador Dali painting, very surreal. Or maybe it’s more like I’m under water. Don’t think another writer has ever evoked such feelings. Whatever it is, I’m definitely going to read his other books. Highly recommend it for people who enjoy being taken out of reality.

Final verdict: Murakami is a kick-ass writer

Her Sky Cowboy - Beth Ciotta 2 1/2 stars Keep trying to read the steam-punk genre but I may have to give up. It was fine while I was reading it but I could put it down easily. Eh.
The Wicked Wedding of Miss Ellie Vyne - Jayne Fresina Fun, light, amusing romance.
The Tower, The Zoo, and The Tortoise - Julia Stuart What a joy to read! Lovely book. One of my favorites of the year.
The Age of Miracles - Karen Thompson Walker 2 1/2 stars it was okay
Panserhjerte - Jo Nesbo Not as engaging as previous in the series.
The Call: A Novel - Yannick Murphy Fantastic book. Quirky and moving.
All He Ever Wanted - Anita Shreve not my cup of tea
The Lady Most Willing...: A Novel in Three Parts - Eloisa James, Connie Brockway, Julia Quinn Fun
